ISLAMABAD, March 16: The deadlock over the appointment of a caretaker prime minister and dissolution of all provincial assemblies on the same day persisted on Saturday as the government and the opposition stuck to their stance of rejecting each other’s nominees.

Days of mischief against democracy over, hopes Raja: PPP-led coalition makes history

ISLAMABAD, March 16: The PPP-led federal coalition bid a historic farewell on Saturday as Pakistan’s first elected government to complete its parliamentary term, with Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf voicing his confidence that it would mark the end of a “sinister chapter” in the country’s history of ambushes on democracy.

The term of the government was linked to the expiry of the five-year term of the 342-seat National Assembly at midnight, though the prime minister might hang on for about a week until a caretaker successor takes over to oversee the next national elections within two months.

23 troops killed as coaster plunges into river

MANSEHRA/GILGIT, March 16: Twenty-three soldiers and two civilians were killed when a coaster plunged into the Indus River off the Karakoram Highway in Kohistan district on Saturday morning. A colonel was among the dead, police said.

The incident occurred in Summer Nula area of Dassu Tehsil.

Balochistan ministers up in arms over bid to ‘impose’ govt

QUETTA, March 16: Balochistan was in turmoil over the issue of provincial caretaker set-up after 17 ministers resigned from the Nawab Aslam Raisani-led cabinet on Saturday and decided to sit on opposition benches in the assembly.

They have warned that they will not accept what they called an interim government which two political parties [JUI-F and Balochistan National Party-Awami (BNP-A)] want to impose on the province.

Morsi to visit Pakistan tomorrow

ISLAMABAD, March 16: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will visit Pakistan on Monday on the invitation of President Asif Ali Zardari.

Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry while announcing the visit said: “President Morsi’s visit to Islamabad is being seen as a watershed and a landmark in the traditional and friendly relations between the two large and important Muslim countries.

Suspect held over Kashmir police attack

SRINAGAR, March 16: Police in India-held Kashmir have detained Parandeep Singh, a daily wager with the public health department, who allegedly provided shelter to militants who carried out the suicide attack on Wednesday, killing five police personnel.

Police were looking for Singh after his name figured during interrogation of Bashir Ahmed alias Haroon Bhai, a resident of Uri who allegedly worked for Lashkar-i-Taiba militant group.
